John Laryea Targets World Title in Upcoming Bout Against Alexander Mejia

ORLANDO: Undefeated Ghanaian boxer John Laryea is gearing up for a significant career milestone as he prepares for his first fight in the United States against Nicaraguan boxer Alexander Mejia. Scheduled for November 1, 2024, at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, this bout is seen as a crucial step for Laryea, who aims to use it as a launch pad for a world title. According to Ghana News Agency, Laryea, known as the 'Expensive Boxer,' is keenly aware of the absence of a current world champion from Ghana and is determined to change that narrative. With a professional record of 13-0-1, including 11 knockouts, he expressed confidence in his abilities and acknowledged the experience of his opponent, Mejia, who has competed against numerous world champions. Laryea emphasized his commitment to showcasing his talent internationally and pledged to secure a victory in his debut U.S. fight. He attributed his readiness to the eight months of preparation and the guidance of Coach Carl Lokko, a seasoned trainer who has led se veral Ghanaian boxers to world title victories. "My aim is to raise the flag of Ghana high," Laryea stated, highlighting his aspiration to win a world title by his 16th fight. He expressed confidence in his capabilities, stating that he does not fear any competitor in the featherweight division. Laryea's last ring appearance was a technical knockout victory against Isaac Dowuona in December 2023 in Accra. The upcoming event in Orlando also features other high-profile matches, including Chavez Barrientes versus Brandon Douglas, Deron Thompson against Malik Lewis, and Alexander Rios Vega facing Felix Santana Jr.
