Kaïs Saïed before Human Rights Council: “exceptional measures aim to preserve rights and freedoms”

President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed said in a speech delivered remotely to the High-Level Segment of the 49th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland Monday that that the July 25th exceptional measures were taken to preserve rights and freedoms, including the first generation of human rights related to political and civil rights and the second generation related to economic and social.

“These measures stem from a firm conviction that the goal behind drafting the Constitution and legislation in general is to implement these rights and not to remain at the stage of theory”, he pointed out, adding that he will not hesitate to further support the successive generations of human rights.

The Head of State said “the information shared by some sides and indicating that these exceptional measures were meant to deny a number of rights are only lies, do not reflect reality and are attempts for defamation.»

All rights are guaranteed by the Constitution and Tunisia’s international commitments, the President highlighted, adding that “we are working to etablish a rule of law in Tunisia and even more, a society of law”.

Saïed indicated that he “also works, nationally, to guarantee all human rights from the first generation to the third and fourth generations and including the second generation.”

He also stressed that the fight against COVID-19 would not have been possible, especially in this situation marked by conflicts, poverty and unprecedented challenges, without the concerted efforts of the national, regional and international communities.
