Kasserine: olive production estimated at 30 thousand tones

The olive picking season is making steady progress in the Kasserine governorate, reaching a progress rate of 85%.

This year’s production is estimated at 30 thousand tonnes (including 1,250 tonnes of organic olive) against 15 thousand tonnes last year, said Bechir Boubakri, head of plant production at the regional agricultural development commission in Kasserine.

The delay in the harvest season, which was scheduled to end on January 31, is due in part to the harvesting method adopted this year by local farmers who used the traditional method (hand picking) instead of the use of high-cost machines, he specified.

The governorate of Kasserine has 29 oil mills with a daily processing capacity of 1,050 tons of olive.

The areas dedicated to olive trees in the region reached 85 thousand 600 ha.
