Kebili: Date harvest estimated at 200 thousand tons, including 186 thousand tons of “Deglet Nour”

The season for collecting dates in the governorate of Kebili will soon be over, reaching until now a progress rate of 95%,” said head of the Regional Authority for Agricultural Development Belgacem Ammar.

The harvest is estimated this year at 200 thousand tons, including 186 thousand tons of “Deglet Nour.” A quantity will be destined for export, he added.

“Despite the region’s high potential for date production, accounting for 70% of the national production, the Kebili governorate exports only small quantities, mainly because of the lack of specialised units for date packaging and export,” he regretted.

Some 14 thousand tons of dates had been exported last year, representing 12% of the quantities exported nationally and which reached 105 thousand tons, the official pointed out.

“However, the inputs of date production are expected to rise this season, especially to the benefit of the farmer,” said the same source, indicating that the price of a kg varies between 2,500 and 4,500 dinars on the local market.
