Keta: Food vendors such as waakye, kenkey, spaghetti, and drink sellers in Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have been urged to prioritize proper food safety and packaging. The call-to-action emphasizes the importance of ensuring that food is handled, stored, and served in a safe and hygienic manner to prevent foodborne illnesses and sudden deaths.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Daniel Asiedu Dartey, a resident of Keta, in commemorating this year's World Food Day on Thursday, October 16, 2025, appealed to all food vendors to practice personal hygiene and package food properly before selling to maintain the quality and safety of food products. Mr. Dartey highlighted the critical nature of food safety, especially in informal markets and street food stalls, urging authorities to promote a culture of food safety among vendors and consumers alike.
He called on the Environmental Protection Authority, the Food and Drugs Authority, and other relevant entities to ensure that food vendors comply with food safety regulations. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Dartey expressed concern over Keta's population relying heavily on roadside food, emphasizing the need for hygienic preparation and storage conditions to prevent contamination.
Mr. Dartey also advised authorities to provide training and education to vendors on proper food handling and preparation practices, as well as conduct regular inspections to monitor compliance and identify areas for improvement. Madam Cynthia Nyagorme, a nutritionist, also urged the public to balance their daily food intake with essential nutrients like protein, vitamins, and carbohydrates to strengthen the body.
Madam Nyagorme emphasized that proper cooking of various foods before consumption is crucial. She encouraged vendors to practice good personal hygiene to build trust with customers and contribute to a healthier and more sustainable food system. She also appealed to the FDA to educate and monitor food sources to promote food safety, which is essential for protecting public health and promoting economic development.
World Food Day is celebrated annually on October 16, with this year's theme being 'Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.' The theme underscores global solidarity and cooperation to achieve zero hunger and promote sustainable food systems, highlighting the importance of working together across borders, sectors, and generations to ensure access to nutritious food for a more sustainable future.
