Krachi West NADMO Director Calls for Enforcement of Life Jacket Use

Krachi: Mr. Awudu Gariba, the Krachi West Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has called on the Government to provide logistics to help enforce life jacket use on the Oti River. Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Gariba explained that the lack of transportation facilities hindered the efforts of NADMO officers to reach remote communities to ensure safety on the lake.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Gariba emphasized the current struggle faced by NADMO in conducting regular monitoring and public education due to the lack of transport. He urged that providing logistics such as motorbikes, vehicles, and speedboats would enable officers to reach more fishing communities and educate residents on the importance of wearing life jackets on the lake.

Mr. Gariba noted that about 15 island communities in the Krachi West Municipality had so far received life jackets, with plans to extend the distribution to 42 more island communities in the area. He made the call after the recent boat accident on the Oti River, which claimed 16 lives, including children.

Mr. Gariba believes that providing such logistics would enhance the efforts of NADMO officers in monitoring compliance and improving safety on the Lake.
