Kumasi Health Directorate Targets Over 30,000 Girls for HPV Vaccination

Kumasi: The Kumasi Metropolitan Health Directorate has embarked on a vaccination campaign targeting 30,979 girls aged nine to 14 years for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Dr. Akosua Gyimah Omari-Sasu, the Metro Health Director, announced that the initiative commenced on October 7, 2025, and by October 9, 2025, had reached 12,641 girls within the specified age group.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Omari-Sasu emphasized the safety of the WHO-approved vaccine, noting that it has no adverse side effects. She mentioned that some individuals might experience minor reactions such as headache, fever, or pain at the injection site. Those experiencing any side effects are encouraged to visit the nearest health center for assistance.

The vaccination campaign focuses on girls aged nine to 14 years, as the vaccine is most effective when administered to those who are not yet sexually active. Dr. Omari-Sasu explained that adults need to undergo cervical cancer screening before receiving the vaccine to ensure they do not already have the condition.

Parents are urged to consent to the free vaccination to protect their children from HPV and the risk of cervical cancer in the future. Some vaccinated girls reported no side effects and expressed satisfaction with receiving the vaccine.

The Human Papillomavirus is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection that almost all sexually active individuals are at risk of contracting at some point. According to World Health Organisation, vaccination is the most effective method for preventing HPV infection and related cancers, including cervical cancer.
