Labourer Held in Police Custody Over Robbery and Attempted Rape Charges

Accra: A 25-year-old labourer, Isaac Odai Afotey, has been remanded in police custody following accusations of robbery and attempted rape. Afotey is alleged to have stolen an iPhone X and other valuables from two victims in the Nungua area of Accra. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to appear in court again on November 4, 2024. According to Ghana News Agency, the court heard that Afotey, along with an accomplice known only as Jonathan, attacked the victims, who are siblings, at a beach near the Sea Desalination Plant. Armed with sticks, stones, and a knife, the assailants reportedly robbed the siblings of two iPhones, a wristwatch, and slippers. The male victim, Emmanuel Amegor, managed to escape during the attack, leaving his sister behind. The prosecution revealed that after the robbery, Afotey attempted to sexually assault the female complainant. He allegedly dragged her to a secluded spot and ordered her to prove she was menstruating by inserting her fingers into her vagina while he watched with his mobile phone's torchlight. The ordeal ended when Amegor returned with two others, apprehending Afotey and taking him to the police. A search conducted on Afotey revealed the stolen mobile phone in his possession. During police questioning, Afotey reportedly admitted to the crime in his caution statement. The accomplice, Jonathan, remains at large as the investigation continues.
