Launch of 1st general census in agricultural sector, October 2018

The 1st general census in the agricultural sector will be launched in October 2018, and the results will be announced towards the end of 2019, by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries.

Director General of Agricultural Studies and Development at the Ministry Abdelhalim Gasmi told TAP that the aim is to count the number of farmers and farms and collect accurate data on the agricultural sector in order to help devise new strategies at the national and regional levels.

In this regard, he pointed out that Tunisia does not have precise and detailed data on the agricultural sector, adding that the last census dating back to 2005 had revealed that the sector has 516 farmers.

He said that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had launched in the past years an international initiative for the development of agricultural statistics to which Tunisia has adhered.

To succeed this 1st census, the government has allocated 25 Million Dinars (MD), in addition to the support of international organisations consisting mainly in specialised international expertise in this field, he indicated.

The official added that a preliminary experiment has already been carried out in all the governorates and a pilot census will be launched next week in Sousse, in the presence of 12 representatives of the regional agricultural development authorities, specifying that the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP) is a main partner in this operation.

Complementary investigations on the use and breeding of livestock will be carried out and a community survey will be conducted in 2020, at the level of all the imadas to know the location of the farms (to identify the existence of agricultural co-operatives, hydraulic groups or agricultural advisers).

Regarding the census of the fishing sector, he said it will be completed by the end of 2019.
