Maghreb Women Union for Peace and Development sees light of day

The creation of the Maghreb Women Union for Peace and Development was announced Thursday on the sidelines of a Maghreb seminar held the National Union of Tunisian Women (French: UNFT) on ” the Role of Maghreb Women in Peace Building and Development.”

The move, announced as International Women’s Day is observed, fits within efforts made to strengthen Arab and Maghreb women’s gains, root the values of equality and establish a fruitful dialogue between components of civil society with a view to achieving stability and development, said UNFT President Radhia Jerbi.

Minister of Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs Neziha Laabidi said Tunisian women are now partners in the development process. Several impediments to women’s promotion still linger, she highlighted.

The ministry is working out a national strategy geared towards the Tunisian family; its main thrusts are child rearing and maternity and paternity leaves to secure the successful development of the family as the fundamental nucleus of society.
