Tunis: The Major Projects Committee has approved the immediate launch of procedures to expand the Borj ElAmri power plant and its addition to the list of major strategic projects. This decision also includes the completion of work on the Thala regional hospital in the Kasserine governorate and the Ennahli Digital City. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, these decisions were made during the committee's regular meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri. The meeting aligns with President Kais Saied's directives aimed at accelerating public project implementation, boosting development, and reducing regional disparities. During her opening remarks, the Prime Minister emphasized the critical need to expedite public project implementation to stimulate economic growth, modernize infrastructure, create jobs, and enhance citizens' quality of life. She urged relevant public authorities to intensify their efforts and ensure thorough on-the-ground monitoring. Public Works and Housing Minister and A cting Minister of Industry Salah Zouari presented the Borj El Amri power station project during the meeting. The project entails setting up a third gas turbine with a capacity of 250 to 400 MW, costing nearly TND 600 million. The commissioning is scheduled for the summer of 2027 to meet the rising domestic electricity demand. The project aims to boost the national electricity system's generating capacity, improve the plant's profitability, and ensure a steady electricity supply, eliminating the need for load shedding during peak consumption periods. The Premier highlighted the necessity for an immediate project launch, accompanied by other major energy programs, including grid development, installation of smart meters, and expansion of electricity storage capacity, as part of the national energy strategy's short, medium, and long-term action plan. In the health sector, the committee reviewed the proposal to grant contracts for completing the Category B regional hospital in Thala. Health Minister Mustapha Fer jani explained that this project is part of efforts to modernize healthcare infrastructure and reduce regional disparities, upholding the right to health in accordance with equity and equal opportunities principles. The hospital will have a capacity of 105 beds and include various facilities such as outpatient clinics, laboratories, a blood bank, radiology facilities, a pharmacy, operating theatres, an intensive care unit, and an A and E ward. The construction cost is estimated at TND 54 million, with TND 15 million allocated for equipment, overseen by the Ministry of Public Works as the delegated project manager. The Prime Minister affirmed that investment in public health is a strategic priority for ensuring healthcare equity and insisted on the immediate launch of the remaining phases with daily on-site monitoring. Regarding the Ennahli Digital City in the Ariana governorate, the committee discussed granting contracts for completing the works. Communication Technologies Minister Sofiene Hemissi stated tha t the project aims to expand the "Tunis Smart Technoparks" technology hub and create advanced technology spaces, with oversight entrusted to the Public Works Ministry. The Prime Minister reiterated that digital transition is crucial for modernizing public administration, enhancing business competitiveness, and positioning Tunisia as a regional hub for smart services. In conclusion, the committee decided to immediately initiate procedures for the extension of the Borj El Amri power station and begin work on the Thala hospital and the Ennahli Digital City. The Premier stressed the importance of expediting public works projects, removing obstacles through increased on-site monitoring by relevant authorities, and delivering these projects within set deadlines and standards to achieve their developmental benefits, thereby improving citizens' living conditions across the country's various regions, following President Kais Saied's directives.
