Mdhilla-GCT: Production stopss at Mdhilla 1 plant following emission of toxic gas

Director of the Mdhilla 1 plant belonging to the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT), Abdallah Fajraoui, told TAP on Tuesday that the production of the sulfuric acid unit at the plant was stopped to end the dispersion, in the delegation of El Ghuetar, of gas containing sulfur dioxide.

These emissions of gas, explains the official, are due to the reactivation of the unit of sulfuric acid after a suspension of the activity, for more than two months, because of the completion of the stock of phosphate.

In a statement released Tuesday, the GCT management in Gafsa says that these gas emissions were caused by restarting the machines and favoured by climatic conditions. They are generally limited in time and had to disappear with the stabilisation of production, the statement adds.

On the night of Monday to Tuesday, 70 cases of asphyxiation or suffering from respiratory difficulty due to the emission of toxic gas from the sulfuric acid plant were admitted to the local hospital of El Guetar. After receiving the necessary care, they all left the hospital.
