The Portfolio Committee on Police will tomorrow, Wednesday 4 September, undertake a deeper analysis of the 4th quarter 2023/24 and 1st quarter 2024/25 crime statistics.
The meeting is the first opportunity the committee will have since the release of the crime statistics on 30 August 2024 where the committee noted the worrying increase in murders especially in the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and Eastern Cape, as well as attempted murder, extortions and contact crime.
‘It is important to undertake a thorough assessment of the crime trends, causative factors and remedial plans by the South African Police Service to deal with the current scourge. While crime statistics provide a picture of the current trends, effective and proactive plans are necessary to ensure that the people of this country are and feel safe,’ said Mr Ian Cameron, the Chairperson of the committee.
