Medical Team at Charles Nicolle Hospital Succeed in Performing 1st Robotic Gastrointestinal Surgery in Tunisia

Tunis: The first robotic surgical operation in Tunisia within the field of gastrointestinal surgery was successfully performed at the Charles Nicolle University Hospital in Tunis. The groundbreaking procedure involved the removal of the gallbladder from a 38-year-old female patient and marked a significant milestone for the country's medical community. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the surgery was conducted by the General Surgery Department 'B' team in the newly established robotic surgery operating theatre at Charles Nicolle Hospital. The procedure lasted 45 minutes and was overseen by Ramzi Nouira, the head of the department. Nouira highlighted the advancement from laparoscopic to robotic surgery, emphasizing that this development will enable more complex and precise interventions in the future. Nouira explained the benefits of robotic surgery, noting its precision, minimized bleeding, and reduced post-operative complications. He also mentioned that such procedures result in shorter hospital s tays, which could alleviate overcrowding in healthcare facilities. The robotic system, primarily used for operations previously performed by laparoscopy, opens up possibilities for delicate interventions, including partial liver or colon resections. The robotic system at Charles Nicolle Hospital was acquired from South Korea through a bilateral cooperation agreement. A medical team underwent two weeks of training in South Korea, and a Korean team assisted with the installation of the device and trained the medical and paramedical staff in Tunisia. Nouira emphasized that the robot is an advanced tool controlled entirely by the surgeon, enhancing precision and efficiency in surgical procedures.
