Migrant smuggling networks in Tunisia are taking advantage of the current conditions in the country to strengthen their illegal activities, said spokesperson for the Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) Romdhan Ben Amor.
A large flow of irregular migrants has been recorded from the Tunisian territories in recent days, he told TAP.
Italian sources reported the arrival of more than 3,000 undocumented migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, to the island of Lampedusa from Tunisia in the last 24 hours.
The large influx of sub-Saharan Africans from Tunisia to the Italian coast is explained by European policies that impose restrictions on the movement of migrants on one hand, and on the other hand, because of efforts to combat irregular migration by Libya, the same source said.
The irregular migration route through Tunisia is once again accessible, Ben Amor noted.
