Migration: Call to implement agreements between Tunisia and Italy

Reinforcing trade union activity, implementing agreements and ensuring more control by endeavouring to ensure the rights of migrants are the main recommendations of the conference on “Tunisian-Italian agreements between text and reality,” organised July 21- 22 in Tunis.

The conference was organised at the initiative of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and the Italian General Confederation of Workers.

Sami Alouani, in charge of the migration project at the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation, called on trade unions to play their full role in implementing the agreements between Tunisia and Italy and to ensure co-ordination between the social funds of the two countries to preserve the rights of migrants.

He also called for finding solutions to the problems of precarious employment in agriculture, fisheries and construction, problems caused by seasonal migration.

Participants discussed the social security system and measures to deal with Tunisian immigrants and to protect them from accidents and occupational diseases.
