Migration governance crucial for political stability, economic growth (minister)

Migration governance is one foundation of political stability and economic growth, said Social Affairs Minister Malek Ezzahi on Tuesday. It is also an effective way to achieve social peace.

The issues of migration and mobility are at the heart of cooperation, dialogue and bilateral and multilateral meetings with various partners with a view to establishing a consensual and supportive approach in this area, Ezzahi said in an opening address of the 5th Annual Forum on Migration.

The event was organised by the National Observatory for Migration (French: ONM) with the support of the International Organisation for Migration.

A sectoral committee in charge of migration and Tunisian expatriates was put in place as part of the preparation of the 2023-2025 Development Plan to examine this issue and raise awareness of regional and local authorities as well as the various actors about the importance of including the issue of migration in the various development programmes and projects.

ONM Director-General Ahlem Hammami said the forum seeks to put in place mechanisms for a better coordination of national and local migration policies.

The Italian ambassador in Tunis called for devising a national and local migration strategy with the support of civil society. 32,000 Tunisian migrants, he said, reached Europe in 2022.

The Chargée d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Tunis said her country supports efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy on migration, with particular focus on illegal migration.
