Accra: The Mineral Income Investment Fund (MIIF) has announced the introduction of a dividend pay-up policy aimed at providing essential financial support to the government for economic development. This new strategy, scheduled to be finalized by the end of November, is designed to minimize risks and interference in leveraging mineral income. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, the policy is a medium-term strategy aligned with section 3, clause (h) of the MIIF Act 2018, which will help mitigate undue risks associated with upfront funding received against mineral incomes. Mr. Koranteng highlighted these points during a panel session at the second edition of the MIIF stakeholder conference in Accra, which focused on "Minerals Value Addition and Value Chain Development - Essential tools for Ghana's Development." During his address, Mr. Koranteng emphasized the importance of maintaining the independence of the MIIF as a sovereign wealth fund. He stressed the need for operational trans parency to avoid negative perceptions among investors and ensure the fund's mandate is strictly followed. Dr. Steve Manteaw, Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, also spoke at the event, suggesting that the MIIF Act should be revised to include a citizen-led oversight committee. This committee would be responsible for public updates on mineral revenue usage and help in creating sustainable benefits from the nation's mineral resources. Additionally, Mr. Denis Gyeyir from the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) advised the MIIF on the importance of transparency. He recommended that the fund should regularly make public its financial statements, contractual agreements, and details of assets under management to build trust and ensure accountability. The MIIF, established under the MIIF Act 2018 (Act 978), manages the government's equity interests in mining companies and collects royalties from the production of minerals such as gold, quarries, limestone, salt, sand winne rs, and manganese in Ghana.
