Military aircraft brings back 46 members of Tunisian community in conflict-stricken Sudan

A military aircraft carrying 46 Tunisians evacuated from Sudan arrived on Tuesday evening at Tunis-Carthage airport. The aircraft had left on Monday to Egypt to evacuate members of the Tunisian community in Sudan who expressed their desire to return to the homeland. The number of Tunisian expatriates in Sudan is around 150, of whom 20 left before the outbreak of the armed conflict, said Tunisia’s ambassador in Khartoum Chafik Hajji. He added that some families, including those residing in Sudan for more than thirty years and having Sudanese citizenship, insisted on staying. A preliminary list of 28 Tunisians who expressed their wish to return to Tunisia has been compiled since the outbreak of the armed conflict on April 15, 2023. It finally settled at 46 after a number of experts working in UN organisations and international agencies expressed their desire to be evacuated by the entities they work for.
