Minister of Defence meets with CTBTO Executive Secretary

Defence Minister Abdekarim Zbidi met, Monday in Tunis, with Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Lassina Zerbo.

Abdelkarim Zbidi welcomed the support provided by this organisation to the national data centre, providing technical and logistical assistance, praising its role in spreading the values of security and peace in the world, the Defence Department said in a press release.

The Minister emphasised the role of the national data Centre in consolidating its knowledge and IT capabilities in the field of remote sensing, calling for the intensification of training sessions and the consolidation of co-operation ties with similar centres, said the same source.

For his part, the Executive Secretary of the CTBTO expressed his satisfaction at Tunisia’s hosting for the second time of a workshop and a training session, paying tribute to the Tunisian experts for their vast experience in remote sensing technology.

The National Centre for Cartography and Remote Sensing, in collaboration with the CTBTO, on Monday afternoon, held a workshop on “the development of Tunisian and African technical expertise in infrasound and assisting African partners for the control of IT resources, data and programmes in the control of nuclear experiments”, said director of the centre Imed Zouheir Jandali.

Tunisia had ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 2004.

In 2013, the Tunisian government also signed an agreement with CTBTO to set up a seismic monitoring station and an infrasound monitoring station.
