Ministry of Agriculture bans meat imports from 21 Brazilian companies

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, on Tuesday, announced a ban on imports of meat from 21 Brazilian meat processing companies, which are involved in the rotten beef scandal.

The Department has also decided to strengthen sanitary and veterinary control of the quantities of meat imported from Brazil, affirming that no meat imports have been carried out with the companies involved.

It also indicated that its veterinary services are closely monitoring import operations in progress.

Brazil, the world’s largest exporter of beef and poultry, is shaken by a scandal after police revealed on March 17 that major meat exporters had bribed inspectors to certify rotten meat as being fit for consumption.
