Ministry of Relations with Constitutional Institutions calls on political parties to present financial reports

The Ministry of Relations with the Constitutional Institutions, Civil Society and Human Rights on Tuesday sent correspondence to political parties, calling on them to urgently submit their financial reports to the Court of Auditors.

Speaking at a press briefing in Tunis, the minister noted that out of a total of 211 parties, only 38 responded to the ministry’s appeal.

The department had twice, in January and May 2017, called on the parties to submit their reports, in accordance with Articles 14, 26 and 27 of Legislative Decree No. 87-2011 on the organisation of political parties, and update their data sheets, he noted.

After one-month deadline, the law will be applied, he warned. It should be noted that penalties ranging from formal notice to suspension of activity are provided for by law.

On a completely different note, Ben Gharbia said that among the 211 political parties, only 22 will participate in the next municipal elections.

“This discrepancy between the number of parties and those which are really active on the national scene should drive us to think of an effective new legislative framework to make the political landscape more transparent.”

The department is now looking into a draft law on political parties, he recalled.
