Mnasri calls general voter turnout in municipal polls “satisfactory”

Mohamed Tlili Mnasri, president of the Independent High Authority for the Elections (ISIE), on Monday, described as “satisfactory”, the general turnout at the municipal polls held on May 6, 2018.

“The 33.5% turnout in the municipal elections was predictable in view of the political tugging seen shortly before the start of the campaign,” the president of the electoral commission said in a statement to TAP.

Mnasri reported a divergence of views between political parties during the discussion of the law on elections and referendums.

According to the preliminary results of the municipal elections, the independent lists have achieved convincing results in all the constituencies, said Mnasri.

He noted that the phenomenon of proximity which favoured the choice of some candidates would be behind these results.

For his part, Nabil Baffoun, a member of the electoral panel stressed that the ISIE board has the powers to declare invalid any list tainted with irregularities.

“Any candidate list that has committed offences is punishable in accordance with the provisions of the current electoral law,” Baffoun said.
