MoU to strengthen carpetshells breeding unit at ISPA of Bizerte signed

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed Tuesday in Tunis between the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Bizerte Higher Institute for Fisheries and Aquaculture (ISPA) to strengthen the shellfish farming unit, according to a statement issued by the two signatories.

The two parties agreed to provide the hatchery with equipment worth US $ 86,852 (about 202,000 dinars) in Tunisia and Korea, to invite Korean experts in the field of aquaculture, in particular shellfish aquaculture with a view to facilitating training sessions in Tunisia, in order to encourage the transfer of technology and to learn about innovations in the production of spat.

This agreement is part of the follow-up of the Tunisian-Korean cooperation project on the transfer of technology in shellfish farming”, which lasted from 2008 to 2011 with a donation of $ 1.6 million dollars (3.71 million dinars).

The project included the establishment of a hatchery in Bizerte as well as a pumping unit for seawater, the installation of equipment for the production of spat, and a boat designed to ensure monitoring of shellfish aquaculture in Lake Bizerte.

The team responsible for carrying out the project was able to master the production cycle of molds through production sessions during the project, the statement said.

Cooperation agreements were also signed between ISPA and private breeders in this field.
