MP delegation meets with Syria’s Bashar al-Assad

An MP delegation, visiting Syria from August 4, met, on Monday, President Bashar al-Assad, Al Horra group MP Sahbi Ben Fraj announced.

The meeting was friendly and constructive. It reflects age-long relations between the Tunisian and Syrian nations, he said.

The cutting of diplomatic ties between both countries did not affect the relations between the two peoples, he pointed out.

Ben Fraj expressed satisfaction at the development of the official discourse on the re-establishment of diplomatic ties between Tunisia and Syria.

Partially re-established since 2012, these relations were limited to the setting up of a consular representation in both countries, he recalled.

The Presidency of the Republic has repeatedly showed its commitment to restore the ties with Syria, he added.

Ben Fraj called on the Presidency of the Republic, the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) and the Prime Ministry to act quickly to restore ties with Syria.

The Syrian Parliament, for its part, expressed its entire willingness to co-operate with the HPR in several fields, he noted. In this respect, the Syrian Parliament expressed readiness to initiate an investigation on networks sending youths to Syria as soon as it receives an official request from the HPR presidency, he added.

The parliamentary delegation has obtained new data on these networks, Ben Fraj noted.

The delegation further reviewed, during this visit, security issues with Syrian officials and met with 55 Tunisian prisoners arrested in the last five years in the Syrian borders.

This visit that will run till August 12 follows the first visit conducted by an MP group in March.

The delegation is led by MP Mbarka Aouainia (Popular Front) and made up of Haykel Ben Belgacem, Abdelmoumem BelaAnes and Chafik Ayadi (Popular Front), Slah Bergaoui, Rabha Ben Hsine and Leila Chettaoui (Al-Horra group of the Machrou Tounes movement), Mohamed Hedi Gueddiche (Nidaa Tounes Movement) and AdnAne Hajji (Democratic group).

Assessor of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) Speaker in charge of Information and Communication Mongi Harbaoui said this is not an official delegation sent by the HPR.

The HPR Bureau has not issued a relevant authorisation. It is an initiative launched by an MP group.

A draft motion tabled in April by Al Horra, the PF, the Free Patriotic Union and Afek Tounes calling for restoring diplomatic ties with Syria failed to pass on July 19 with 68 votes in favour, 6 against and 27 abstentions.
