Municipal elections 2017: Registration rate in Tunis 1 constituency below expectations

The voter registration rate for the municipal elections in December 2017, in the Tunis 1 constituency is below expectations, said Saturday Salah Riahi, President of the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) regional section in Tunis 1.

“The number of new voters registered is still below expectations,” he said at a press conference in Tunis to give an overview of the progress of the registration process.

According to him, some 14,600 new registrations, mostly in the youth category, have been reported so far.

Riahi called on political parties and civil society to further raise awareness about the importance of participation in the electoral process.

According to him, these campaigns will mainly target those who have not registered in previous elections, especially those who have reached the age of 18. He also urged citizens to change their address to update their registration.

In addition, Riahi pointed out that the participation of some security and military personnel in the municipal elections will help contribute in the near future to the increase in the registration rate.

Registration for the 2017 municipal elections started on June 19 and will continue until August 10.
