Municipal elections 2018: “candidate lists may be denied some electoral seats in case of proven violations”, says Jarboui

“Candidate lists in the 2018 municipal elections may be denied certain electoral seats in case electoral offences are confirmed, member of the Independent High Authority for the Elections (ISIE) Anis Jarboui announced on municipal polling day, Sunday.

“Certain offences and violations of the rules governing the electoral law could be punished by imprisonment or fines after they are sent to the public prosecutor’s office,” he told TAP.

The polling stations closed at 18:00, with the exception of the polling station “Al-Mouthabara” in the locality of Essayah, Ben Guerdane (Medenine Governorate) which remained open one hour after the regulation time, he recalled.

Closed for about two hours amid protests from a number of citizens who disputed that ten-year-old children have election ink on the index finger, the Al-Muthabara polling station reopened with a new team.

The voting operation in 8 polling stations in the municipality of Mdhilla, Gafsa governorate will be postponed indefinitely, in view of the impossibility of continuing the poll in these stations, he further indicated.

Under the Elections and Referendum Act, the Electoral Commission is empowered to redo the municipal elections in those 8 stations within 30 days of the date of the announcement of the preliminary results, namely May 9, 2018, he said.
