Municipal elections 2018: elections should establish true democracy, says Ghannouchi

The first municipal elections since the 2011 Revolution should make the process of democratic transition a reality, Ennahdha President Rached Ghannouchi said on Saturday.

“The municipal elections of 2018 must establish a true democracy,” he said at the opening of the party’s campaign in the delegation of HraAria (governorate of Tunis).

Ghannouchi reported a significant contribution from the Ennahdha movement in the conduct of these municipal offices, though several forces opposed the local governance process, he said.

“54% of the candidate lists of Ennahdha are independent,” said Ghannouchi, recalling the opening of the movement to all Tunisian experts.

According to the president of Ennahdha, the political compromise reached in Tunisia has avoided the Syrian, Libyan, Iraqi and Yemeni scenarios.

For her part, Souad Abderrahim, Ennahdha leader in the Tunis1 district urged the parliament to complete the review of the code on local authorities before the May 6, 2018 election.

The campaign for municipal elections, the first after the 2011 revolution, began in all municipal constituencies.

Some 2,074 candidate lists: 860 independent lists, 159 coalition lists and 1,055 party lists are running for these elections. Women are heading 30.33% of the lists.
