Municipal elections: Ennahdha will establish common lists, 50% by its members and 50% by independent competences

Mohsen Nouichi, chairman of the electoral office, a member of the Ennahdha executive board, said that the movement is planning to participate in all constituencies and municipalities in preparation for the next municipal elections through the establishment of common electoral lists composed of 50% by its members and 50% by independent local expertise.

In an interview with TAP on Tuesday, Nouichi said candidates will be placed on these lists in light of the results of the basic elections for party members and the recommendations of the 10th congress of Ennahdha of May 2016.

These recommendations emphasised the importance of democracy at grass-roots level and Ennahdha’s opening to other skills outside the movement.

According to Nouichi, the electoral rolls will be ready by the end of August, a few days before candidacy for the municipal elections scheduled for 10 September by the Independent High Authority for the Election (ISIE).

He also said that 72% of Tunisians hope that municipal elections will improve their conditions and strengthen their participation in decision-making at the local level, according to the results of the polls.

Nouichi reiterated Ennahdha’s attachment to the elections on December 17, describing as random the arguments put forward by certain parties and civil society components.

The official also reaffirmed the movement’s commitment to the adoption of the Local Government Code.

ISIE member Nabil Baffoun told TAP Monday that the number of municipal registrations rose to 124,410 last Sunday, including 61,688 women and 62,722 men.
