Nabeul handicraft design hub: meeting place for designers and craft professionals

The first handicraft design hub inaugurated on Wednesday at the exhibition gallery Nabeul (former space of SOCOPA), is a meeting place between designers, young designers, craft professionals (craftsmen and industrialists) operating in the fields of porcelain, blown glass and wood.

The handicraft design hub located in Nabeul, was inaugurated by Minister of Tourism and Crafts Salma Elloumi and Ambassador of the European Union (EU) Patrice Bergamini. It is part of the support programme for the development of clusters in the creative and cultural industries “in the South of the Mediterranean, and that of the cooperation between the National Office of Tunisian Handicrafts (ONAT) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) for the period 2014-2018. The design hub is funded, up to 120 thousand euros, by the European Union (EU) and by the Italian cooperation.

Ambassador of the EU in Tunis, Patrice Bergamini said that the new space, which brings together young designers and designers pursuing their studies in the institutes of the fine arts, in addition to craftsmen, will make it possible to realize the interaction between traditional and modern Tunisian handicrafts and boost exports of Tunisian handicrafts.

He added that the creations that will emerge from this cooperation between artisans and creators will be very competitive, especially since they will bring together modern design, the depth of history and craftsmanship. .

Bergamini has also indicated that the space will open not only for the sale of products in Tunisia but also abroad, thanks to high quality Tunisian handicraft products and this in the framework of artisans and artists who have taken the slogan “No borders for gift and creation”.

In the same context, he announced that the EU will make available to Tunisia an amount of Euros 45 million for 2019/2022 to support projects and programmes targeting handicrafts, alternative tourism and tourism and the fields of creation and design.

The official has also underlined the need to work to enhance the creative energies that can create and innovate in the context of partnership and cooperation, in order to highlight unique Tunisian specificities in the world, the most famous of which are handicrafts and Tunisian traditional heritage.
