Nabeul: race of boats made from plastic bottles in El Maamoura beach

A race of boats made from plastic bottles was organised this weekend at the beach of El Maamoura in Nabeul. The organisation of this race came to materialise a project conciliating sporting practice and environment protection. The event, which continues from 6 to 16 July in El Maamoura, is organised at the initiative of the coastal protection association.

The boats made with plastic bottles were made in workshops supervised by a Polish specialist, president of the association Mohamed Bannay told TAP.

At least 30 young people from El Maamoura and neighbouring towns participated in these workshops, which took place from 9 to 12 July and where they were introduced to the production of boats from plastic waste.

This project was a great success with the summer visitors and local people. According to the president of the coastal protection association, a similar project helps to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of environmental protection and the recovery of waste and plastic bottles collected during beach cleaning campaigns.

Called “Recup plastic for sailing at sea”, this project, launched last March, targeting primary school pupils, high school pupils and secondary school pupils, aims to raise young people’s awareness of environmental protection and the cleanliness of beaches.
