ACCRA: The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Volta River Authority (VRA) recently conducted a tabletop simulation exercise to test and enhance their Flood Contingency Plan, aiming to bolster disaster preparedness and response strategies across Ghana. According to Ghana News Agency, the simulation exercise was a proactive step by NADMO and VRA to ensure better coordination among various stakeholders and improve disaster response mechanisms. Mr. Seji Sadji, Deputy Director of NADMO, emphasized the significance of the exercise in enhancing coordination and preparedness for potential flood incidents. He noted the progress in providing temporary housing for flood victims but highlighted the ongoing challenges in securing permanent solutions. "Nearly 1,000 individuals are still waiting for permanent housing, a significant reduction from the initial count of 10,000," Mr. Sadji stated. Further elaborating on the efforts, Mr. Sadji pointed out the construction projects underway in Central Ton gu, South Tongu, and North Tongu, which aim to provide permanent housing for the affected families. He stressed the importance of continued support and effective management to ensure that all affected families receive adequate care and housing. Mr. Divine Osborne Fenu, North Tongu District Chief Executive, also expressed his support for the simulation initiative, describing it as a critical step towards preventing future disasters related to dam spillages. He highlighted the need for using all communication channels effectively to alert communities in case of water spillage from the Kpong and Akosombo dams. The initiative received praise from Togbe Kwasi Nego VI, Mankralo of Mepe, who commended the government's efforts in raising awareness about flood risks. However, he urged for a quicker completion of the resettlement housing projects and better compensation plans for the flood victims. The simulation brought together members of the District Disaster Management Committee, including representatives from r eligious organizations and traditional authorities, to foster effective communication and coordination during emergencies. This collaborative approach underscores NADMO and VRA's commitment to proactive disaster management and community safety.
