National Day of Quality: 2,191 industrial businesses obtained international certifications (minister)

Out of a total of 5,700 industrial enterprises in Tunisia, 2,191 obtained international certifications, said Minister of Industry and Small and Medium-sized Firms Imad Hammami.

Industrial activity accounts for 85% of Tunisia’s 17,692 standards, he Friday told participants at the opening of the National Day of Quality held at the premises of the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (French: UTICA).

The ministry set as a goal a better quality by Tunisian firms to increase their competitive edge and a higher number of certified companies, he said.

The National Quality Programme, which launched in 1995, provides technical support to industrial companies in a bid to help them export, said kaizen Project Coordinator at the Industry Ministry Ourida Chalwati.

Kaizen project, which is part and parcel of the National Quality Programme, was set in motion in 2016 and is due to run till 2019. It is geared towards stepping up the productivity of industrial businesses by means of offering technical support by quality experts.

Kaizen, a Japanese approach, rests on a process of enhanced productivity that involves staff in making improvements. The project essentially targets increased competitiveness in textile, leather and shoes, mechanical, electrical engineering and chemical industries and agrifood business, Chalwati highlighted.

Nearly 800 businesses joined the National Quality Programme, while a further 120 received technical support in connection to productivity. The programme upped the productive capacity 50%.
