Nationwide Strike in Cyprus Leads to Major Flight Disruptions

Larnaca: Air travellers in Cyprus are expected to face major disruptions on Thursday, due to a nationwide strike.

According to Ghana News Agency, around 50 flights and 15,000 passengers are to be affected by midday.

The strike, organized by trade unions, is a protest against cuts to automatic inflation compensation. Since 2023, only two-thirds of the allowance has been paid, instead of the full amount.

The strike is set to last from 11 am to 2 pm (0800-1100 GMT) and will also affect schools, public transport and parts of the health service. Critical infrastructure such as electricity, water, telecommunications and emergency services will continue to operate with skeleton staff.

The dispute between trade unions, employers' associations and the government over the future of inflation compensation remains deadlocked. After negotiations failed, talks are to be resumed under the mediation of the Ministry of Labour.
