Navy organises first edition of freestyle race between Kerkanah islands and Sfax

About twenty members of the elite regiment 52 of the various national naval corps swam across the 25 km distance separating the Kerkennah Islands and the city of Sfax, a first competition of the kind organised By the French Navy.

The swimmers started the race at 7:30 am from Sidi Youssef port in Kerkennah to reach the beach at Taparura at 6:30 pm in the afternoon. The swimmers crossed the 25 kilometers alternately following successive stages.

The vice-captain of the chief of the Navy Mohamed Ben Jemaa told TAP that this first edition is part of the promotion of the military sport and the encouragement of the soldiers ‘to practice sea sports to keep fit.

“We plan to organise this event annually with the possibility of giving it a national character by making the competition open to civilians and the military,” he said.

In a festive atmosphere, the arrival of the participants at the Taparura beach was accompanied by animation shows and demonstrations of combat sports by members of the Navy.

The spectators also followed a mock operation simulating and neutralising a terrorist attack.
