“Nearly 60 hotels will offer preferential rates to Tunisians at Handicrafts Fair” (FTH)

“Nearly 60 Tunisian hotels will participate in the Handicraft Exhibition (April 26 to May 5 2018) and offer local tourists preferential rates for accommodation in hotels in the country, said Mehdi Allani, vice-president of the Tunisian Hotel Federation (FTH).

Speaking at a press conference held Friday in Tunis, Allani called on Tunisians to book in advance in hotels to have room availability and preferential rates.

Rym Ben Fadhel Belajouza, FTH S-G, said there is a recovery this year, the European market, whose consumers have the tradition of making reservations in advance, while Tunisians do not have this habit. In this case, the Tunisian customer may see his request not satisfied, especially at favorable prices.

As of March 31, 2018, nearly a million overnight stays were provided by Tunisians in hotels, representing 40% of total tourist nights, compared with 986 thousand overnight stays for the European market.

“This is a 2.6% increase in the local market compared to 2017 and 40% compared to 2010 (base year),” she said.

“Regarding revenues from the Tunisian market, Belajouza stressed the absence of statistics on revenue from the Tunisian market, which is a shame”.

Mouna Ben Halima, in charge of communication at the FTH called for the revision of the hotel classification standards, dating from 2005 and which do not take into account the part of the services provided in the hotels, whose quality is much criticized by foreigners as well as Tunisians. She also stressed the need to consult online rating sites and share experiences for choosing hotels.

The participation of the FTH, with a stand of 238 m2, at the Handicrafts, aims to bring together Handicrafts and hospitality, make known the artisans to hoteliers, to promote the Tunisian handicrafts in the hotels and fight against counterfeiting, which contributes to the degradation of the image of the tourist product and asphyxiates the sector of the craft industry.

It also offers, to the 130,000 visitors of the fair, alternative tourism, through the exhibition of a new tourist product, guest houses.

“The FTH will also finance, the first three prizes of the competitions organised on the occasion of this fair, up to 10 thousand dinars. These are two competitions on the theme “creation of souvenir items”, one of which is intended for designers and the other for professional craftsmen. The third competition concerns the theme of “the art of the table”, said Dorra Miled, president of training commission at the FTH.
