Need to provide necessary mechanisms for women to participate in municipal elections

Secretary-General of the Association of Tunisian Women for Development Research (AFTURD), Mounira Hammemi, on Tuesday, called for the need to provide women with all the necessary mechanisms so that they can participate in the next municipal elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Tunis, Hammemi called for the need to sensitize women, especially those from inland regions to the importance of municipal and regional elections.

She emphasised the need for training sessions on provisions of the Constitution relating to local authorities and elections.

She also said that the Women Vote project, which started since 2015 and will run until 2018, aims essentially to introduce women to the concept of local authorities as defined in the Tunisian constitution.

Academic Afef Hammemi Marrakchi, for her part, emphasised the importance of the guide developed by AFTURD on the participation of women in municipal and regional elections.

This guide defines the legal texts relating to the participation of women in Tunisia, whether they are candidates or voters.
