New centre for street children to open end of April, says Neziha Laabidi

A new centre for street children will open at the end of April, Minister of Women, Family and Children Neziha Laabidi announced.

Efforts made by the ministry to make these children’s parents aware of the need to protect them from the dangers threatening them are generally doomed to failure, she told TAP at her hearing Friday by the Rights, Freedoms and External Relations’ Committee of the House of People’s Representatives.

The issue of street children is a worrying phenomenon, she said, qualifying it as a crime against childhood and as trafficking in human beings.

The creation of this centre is part of a strategy that will be ready before April 14 and which was drafted jointly by the ministry and other departments.

This strategy focuses on revamping youth and children integration centres and presenting mechanisms to counter this phenomenon.

Six committees under the women ministry were charged with identifying these centres’ shortcomings and proposing adequate solutions, she added.
