Nkroful: The Chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutuah V, has issued a stern warning to political party executives allegedly involved in illegal mining activities in the Ellembelle District of Ghana's Western Region. The chief condemned the degradation of local lands, particularly those surrounding the Nkroful Agricultural Senior High School, and called for immediate intervention from the national government. According to Ghana News Agency, Nana Kutuah V highlighted that CIC Impex Mining Limited, a contractor assigned by the Ellembelle District Assembly, was operating under the pretense of desilting the Subre River. He accused political leaders of being complicit in these activities and demanded that they cease immediately, threatening to expose those involved if they fail to comply. The district's initiative to dredge and reclaim approximately 1.2 kilometers of land, starting from the high school, was meant to be supervised by a six-member committee. However, the chief expressed frustration with the District Ass embly for permitting the environmental degradation and implored the Office of the President to take swift action. Nana Kutuah also criticized some traditional authorities for their alleged support of illegal mining, which he said complicates efforts to curb the practice. He reported that armed miners have resisted the Nkroful Anti-Galamsey Task Force's attempts to stop mining operations, and cited a lack of support from security forces as a major barrier to progress. The chief called on national security agencies to take decisive action to end illegal mining in Nkroful and the wider Ellembelle District. Additionally, he urged for proper funding to facilitate the desilting and reclamation of the Subre and Bruma rivers to mitigate flooding risks. The Nkroful Divisional Council has pledged to continue its fight against illegal mining, reassuring local residents of its commitment to preserving the region's lands.
