“The Presidency of the Republic has not responded to our initiative; it refuses to interact with us. So far, we have received neither rejection nor approval,” said Secretary General of the Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LTDH) Mohieddine Lagha.
Lagha, who is also member of the League’s delegation to the meetings drafting a “National Salvation initiative,” was speaking to TAP on Saturday during a rally held by the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) and a number of national organisations, to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the Tunisian revolution.
The President has not reacted to this initiative despite the incessant calls from the secretary-general of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), the president of the LTDH, the rest of the national organisations and political parties, the same source said.
President Saied has not been formally contacted on this subject, he added, hoping to see the presidency interact favourably with the proposals that will be submitted as part of this initiative.
Delegations representing the four national organisations making up the initiative held a first meeting Friday.
Participants unanimously stressed the need to start drafting documents on political, economic and social issues.
It was agreed, according to the LTDH S-G, to hold regular meetings, open to experts who will participate in drafting these documents, pending the involvement of other national organisations before submitting them to the President.
