North Tongu Launches National Sanitation Day With District-Wide Clean-Up

Accra: The North Tongu District Assembly has successfully launched and observed the National Sanitation Day with a massive clean-up exercise across major communities. The exercise was in line with the directive of President John Dramani Mahama to revive the nationwide initiative.

According to Ghana News Agency, the official launch, held at the Juapong Market, brought together staff of the District Assembly, the Presiding Member, the District Coordinating Director, Environmental Health Officers, representatives of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the Ghana National Fire Service, and other key stakeholders. The exercise, which was marked by high community participation, was also graced by Miss Ghana 2022 and Miss Ghana Tourism, whose presence inspired the youth and encouraged civic involvement.

Pupils from the Juapong R/C Basic School actively took part in the clean-up, symbolising a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens. In an address, Ms. Victoria Amefadzi Yawa Doe, District Chief Executive (DCE) of North Tongu, expressed appreciation to President Mahama for reviving the National Sanitation Day initiative. She emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining clean surroundings and urged residents to make environmental cleanliness a shared daily habit. ‘Cleanliness should be a way of life for all of us. When we take ownership of our environment, we promote good health and sustainable development,’ Ms. Doe stated.

The DCE reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to institutionalising monthly clean-up exercises and continuous environmental sensitisation to make North Tongu a model district in sanitation and sustainable community development. The exercise continued at Battor Market and in adjoining communities, with active involvement of Assembly Members, traditional leaders, market women, and pupils from Battor D/A Basic School.

The Chiefs of the Battor Traditional Council and Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV, Queen Mother of the Mepe Traditional Area, participated in the activity, a gesture that reinforced community unity and traditional commitment to environmental care. Some residents commended the Assembly for leading the initiative and called for sustained public education on sanitation and proper waste management. ‘We are happy to see everyone working together for a cleaner community. We hope this spirit continues every month,’ they disclosed to the Ghana News Agency.

With strong logistical support from Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the Ghana National Fire Service, the exercise achieved significant success and renewed the district’s communal spirit.
