Number of Tunisian doctors who left Tunisia far higher than figures advanced

The number of Tunisian physicians who left the country is far higher than the figures advanced by the National Order of Doctors, said Secretary-General Nizar Laadhari.

The number of certificates of good conduct provided to doctors by the regulatory body at their request is used as a reference to establish the list of migrants knowing that the certificate is one of the supporting documents required, Laadhari told TAP. A number of countries, such as Germany, do not require though such certificates when hiring.

In 2021, over 970 Tunisian doctors left the country to work overseas against 570 in 2018. The decision to apply to work abroad is motivated by many factors, including insufficient financial resources and poor working conditions in hospitals, increased violence against medics and paramedics on duty (6% of physical violence in the public sector is reported in the health sector in addition to verbal violence).
