Number of unemployed engineers in Tunisia reaches 10 thousahnd (OIT)

The number of unemployed engineers in Tunisia reached 10 thousand against 5 thousand in 2016, said Secretary General of the Order of Tunisian Engineers (OIT) Abdessattar Hosni.

This situation is caused by the precarious employment policy adopted in the country, he explained.

Some 2,500 engineers leave the country each year due to low wages, he told TAP at a sit-in staged on Tuesday by the OIT. The engineering sector is facing several problems mainly the material situation and deterioration of the engineers’ purchasing power compared to other professions.

The salary of an engineer in the administration range between 1,300 and 1,800 thousand dinars, he indicated.

Hosni denounced the exclusion of engineers in the development of economic laws and policies in the country.

He called on the OIT to improve the engineers’ material situation which should be close to that of other professions, recommending also submitting as soon as possible the basic status governing the engineer profession and to involve the OIT in social bargaining.

Besides, the official called for settling the problem of the engineers’ employment, notably youths, adding that 40% of agronomists are unemployed.

The number of engineers, members of the OIT amounts to 61 thousand against 15 thousand who are not.
