“Only 6% of Saied’s electoral promises fulfilled” (I Watch)

Only 6% of President Kais Saied’s electoral promises have been fulfilled since he took office, I watch said as it presented its “Said Meter” report at a press conference Monday in Tunis.

I watch described the figure as “very low”, knowing that the President of the Republic has been in charge of all powers since July 25.

The rate of unmeasurable promises is 22%, while 28% are being fulfilled, the same source said.

In its report, the organisation listed 32 other electoral promises that the President of the Republic had pledged to fulfill.

The presidential promises include urgent measures, the social field, the foreign policy, rights and freedoms, security and defense, development, employment, combating corruption as well as the political and the economic field, said I Watch President Achraf Aouadi.

The promises that have been fulfilled focused on promoting relations with neighboring countries. This is shown through the outpouring of solidarity brought to Tunisia in its fight against the pandemic.

They also revolved around efforts to decrease prices of basic products and improve Tunisian citizens’ purchasing power.

Restoring the State’s role in the social field and supporting just causes (namely the Palestinian cause) are the promises being fulfilled, Aouadi underlined.

The remaining promises (44%) went unheeded as did the neutrality of the public service. Aouadi spoke of “the double standards policy” practiced by authorities during protests.

The organisation argued that no legislative initiative has been put forward to criminalize normalization with Israel to date.

President Saied has not sought to keep the military institution away from political tensions.

According to I Watch, promoting rights and freedoms is the least privileged area.

In the political field, I Watch drew attention to the absence of initiatives regarding the revision of the electoral law in its section relating to municipal elections.

The NGO said Saied’s economic promises have not been fulfilled, namely the fight against smuggling and money laundering, fostering accountability and control, boosting development, employment and finally combating marginalisation in Tunisia’s inland regions.
