Operation Mobilisation Donates Maternity Clinic to Gushegu

Gushegu: To help reduce maternal mortality in rural communities, Operation Mobilisation (OM) Ghana has opened the Queen of Sheba Maternity Clinic in Gushegu. The facility marks a major step in expanding access to affordable, quality maternal health services for women in the Northern Region.

According to Ghana News Agency, the clinic is equipped with four consulting rooms capable of accommodating up to 100 consultations a day, along with two labour wards and 20 inpatient beds, with provisions for future expansion. It is projected to handle about 1,000 deliveries annually and provide essential care to over 40,000 women and their families across Gushegu Municipality and neighbouring areas. The clinic is equipped with modern medical technology and staffed by trained healthcare professionals offering comprehensive prenatal, delivery, and postnatal services.

Funded through donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses, primarily from the Netherlands and the United States, the project was implemented with the support of volunteers and in collaboration with the local community. Explaining the choice of Gushegu, OM Ghana said the town’s growing population, coupled with improvements in infrastructure such as the Eastern Corridor Road, positioned the facility to serve not only Gushegu but neighbouring districts as well.

Cutting the tape to open the facility, Northern Regional Minister, Mr John Adolf Ali Nburidiba commended OM Ghana for complementing government efforts in healthcare delivery. ‘This project demonstrates the invaluable role of partnerships in improving healthcare access. On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, I express our gratitude to the OM community for their investment in the people of the Northern Region,’ he stated.

In his opening remarks, OM Country Director, Mr Paul Tom Nyama, emphasized the holistic vision of the project. ‘The Queen of Sheba Maternity Clinic is more than a healthcare facility; it is a tangible expression of God’s love and our commitment to holistic transformation through the Boon family from the Netherlands. We believe every mother and child deserves dignity, safety, and quality healthcare,’ he said.

The Queen of Sheba Maternity Clinic, he explained, is expected to make a significant impact in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, while advancing long-term community development in Gushegu and beyond. The launch of the clinic forms part of OM’s global mission to foster vibrant communities of Jesus followers among the least reached. With over 4,500 staff in 147 countries and two book ships-Logos Hope and Doulos Hope-to share knowledge, help, and hope, OM continues to blend spiritual outreach with sustainable, community-centred initiatives.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by traditional leaders including a representative of the overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari Mahama II, and OM partners, including Dutch medical missionaries Dr. Gerben and Dorien Boon and their family, whose dedication has been instrumental to the initiative.
