Opposition parties demonstrate in Tunis on Republic Day

Opposition parties demonstrated in Tunis on Tuesday to mark Republic Day, which falls on July 25 each year. Addressing his supporters in front of the capital’s municipal theatre, President of the National Salvation Front, Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, described President Kais Saied’s government as “bankrupt and a total failure”, ruling out any agreement between Tunisia and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Democratic Movement also organised a march in Tunis, attended by dozens of party supporters. The demonstrators held up banners reading “Freedom…Freedom… the police state is over” and “Freedom for the Tunisian opposition.” At a rally in Tunis, Abir Moussi, President of the Free Destourian Party, accused President Kais Saied of “changing the political system for the worse”. Around 300 party supporters attended the rally. On this occasion, Moussi called for an end to the exceptional measures and the organisation of an “honest” and “transparent” presidential election. She announced that she is her party’s candidate for the next presidential elections. According to a TAP journalist on the spot, a large security presence was deployed on Avenue Habib Bourguiba on Tuesday. Search checkpoints were also set up to protect demonstrators. No major incidents were reported.
