OTDH calls on President of Republic to intervene urgently to save 5 Tunisians facing heavy sentences in Libya

The Tunisian Human Rights Observatory (French : OTDH) called on the President of the Republic to intervene urgently to save five young Tunisians accused of murder and facing heavy sentences in Libya.

One of them was sentenced to death on April 10 by a court in Tripoli. The other four will appear next May 5 in the court of Misrata, according to the president of the observatory Mostapha Abdelkabir.

In a statement to TAP, the same source claims to have evidence that proves the innocence of the defendants. “The Libyan judiciary must investigate this case to verify the validity of the accusations”.

The president of the Observatory called on the Tunisian authorities to challenge the decision of the Libyan court and to appeal.

He called on the Libyan authorities to “save young Tunisian workers, without any problem, who felt in need to go to Libya to find work”.

Joined Sunday by TAP, an authorised source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that the department closely monitors the case of these Tunisians and that the services of the Ministry are in constant contact with families and work to ensure a fair trial for the accused.

The same source added that the consular services are in contact with the Libyan consular services to know the ups and downs of this case, recalling that the decision issued by the Libyan court is only a judgment of first instance.

“The ministry is counting on the longstanding relations of fraternity and fruitful cooperation between the two countries to solve this case”.
