Accra: Professor Abednego F.O. Amartey, the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), recounted his achievements during his eight-year tenure at the university's sixteenth congregation. The incoming Vice Chancellor will be Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, the current Pro-Vice Chancellor of UPSA. According to Ghana News Agency, Professor Amartey, who will conclude his two four-year terms on December 31, 2024, reflected on his journey that began on August 12, 2017. He emphasized the progress made under his leadership, noting the significant increase in academic programs from 21 to 48 and the rise in associate and full professors from three to a combined total of 18. Professor Amartey highlighted the remarkable growth in faculty publications, which quadrupled due to the implementation of a unique publications reward scheme. The student population also experienced substantial growth, doubling from 11,500 to 22,234 over the past eight years. Under his leadership, UPSA expanded its infrastructure significantly, with internally generated funds being the main financial source. The university now boasts three hostels compared to just one eight years ago and ranks fourth locally and between 801 and 1000 globally. The university also expanded its land holdings to accommodate future growth. Among the completed infrastructure projects are the Abednego F. O. Amartey Towers, featuring state-of-the-art facilities, and the Kofi-Ohene Konadu Auditorium, a 3,400-seater venue. Other notable projects include a multipurpose Student Resources Centre, the Vice-Chancellor's Villa, and a model police station to enhance campus security. During the congregation, Professor Amartey announced that 5,247 students will graduate across four sessions, including 906 postgraduates, 3,711 undergraduates, and 630 diploma students. The UPSA Law School and the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Studies will present 1,473 graduates, with a breakdown of achievements in various classes. Chie f Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, the guest speaker, urged the graduates to uphold high standards of responsibility in their future endeavors, whether in industry, career, family, or public service.
