Over 50 thousand cases of Alzheimer in Tunisia and number of elderly to reach 2 millions in 2030 (specialists)

Tunisia has over 50 thousand patients with Alzheimer’s disease, said professor Riadh Gouider, head of the Neurology ward and Alzheimer centre at the Razi Hospital, on the closing of a meeting Sunday in Djerba on geriatrics and family medicine.

He specified that due to the rising number of persons affected by the disease, a national plan should be implemented for a better patient care.

According to Gouider, Alzheimer’s is a neurodegitative disease that leads to a gradual loss of memory, specifying that medicines are given to patients to slow the development of the disease, but no treatment currently cures the disease.

“Alzheimer’s disease is a costly disease both for the necessary care and for the care of the family and the relatives,” he further pointed out.

Abdelhakim Korchid, chairman of the meeting’s organising committee, affirmed that the choice of the topic of geriatrics was dictated by the change in the demographic structure of Tunisian society and the increase in the number of elderly people, underlining that “Geriatrics and family medicine must be recognised as a full-fledged specialty by the Health Ministry.”

“Geriatrics is a new specialty that meets the needs of a large number of people around the world, especially for persons over 65 years of age, 10 per cent of the world’s population,” said Sami Kammoun, Professor Of geriatrics at the Sfax Faculty of Medicine.

“According to statistics, the number of the elderly in Tunisia reached over 1 million in 2014 and will be about 2 million in 2030,” he added.

In this regard, he mentioned that the social support of the elderly and the care by their relatives as well as the excessive cost of medicines and the social and family support are all challenges to be taken up in Tunisia and require a new organisation strategy at the social and health levels.
