Over Hundred Acres of Farmland Submerged in Flood at Anloga

Accra: More than a hundred acres of farmland in the Anloga District of the Volta Region have been submerged following recent floods after heavy rainfall in the area. The situation has inflicted significant hardship on the affected communities, destroying approximately 1,200 acres of farmland and impacting about 600 farmers.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Richard Agbemasor, a tomato farmer in Anloga, reported that most farm products were destroyed, highlighting the scale of loss faced by many local farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. “Crops were submerged, leading to considerable economic hardship for those of us who rely on agriculture for a living. We need help from all manner of people,” he stated.

He further explained that a significant number of farmers have been directly impacted by the floods, facing numerous challenges in recovering from their losses, especially those who had invested heavily in their farming businesses. Farm products such as tomatoes, okra, carrots, peppers, and lettuce were destroyed, which would have long-term effects on farmers’ income and investments in the next farming season.

Mr. Agbemasor emphasized that the floods pose a threat not only to food security but also to the economic stability of farming households. “This has never happened to us before. We need immediate intervention to regain losses,” he said. Madam Selina Adzo Amegorme, another farmer, urged for efforts to support affected farmers, including government aid, NGO interventions, or community-led initiatives to mitigate the impact of such calamities.

Madam Amegorme added that the destruction of farmlands raises concerns about food security in the region. The loss could lead to implications for local food availability and price hikes, affecting both producers and consumers. She called for a coordinated response involving local authorities such as the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), humanitarian organizations, and possibly international aid to help recover and rebuild.

Recovery from the flood situation in the area requires concerted efforts from various stakeholders, including the District Chief Executive and heads of institutions, to support the affected farmers. This support is crucial for restoring agricultural productivity and livelihoods in the Anloga district. Other information gathered by GNA revealed that the department of agriculture, NADMO, and other relevant organizations have commenced investigations into the situation for further attention.
